10 Essential Commands Every Dog Should Know

1. Sit

The foundation of all dog training. Hold a treat above your dog's nose and slowly move it back. As their head follows the treat, their bottom will naturally lower.

2. Stay

Once your dog can sit reliably, add duration. Say "stay," take a step back, then return and reward.

3. Come

Essential for safety. Start in a low-distraction environment and gradually increase difficulty.

4. Down

From a sitting position, lure your dog down with a treat moving toward the floor.

5. Leave It

Prevents your dog from picking up dangerous items. Start with a treat in each hand.

6. Heel
